Un estudi científic conclou que la mandíbula de Banyoles seria el fòssil d’Homo Sapiens més antic d’Europa

Investigadors americans, espanyols i de la UdG afirmen que les restes òssies descobertes el 1887 no són d'un neandertal

Un estudi científic conclou que la mandíbula de Banyoles seria el fòssil d’Homo Sapiens més antic d’Europa. La recerca, feta per investigadors americans, espanyols i de la UdG, afirma que les restes descobertes en una pedrera l’any 1887 no són d’un neandertal, sinó que podrien atribuir-se a un Homo Sapiens o bé a un híbrid de les dues espècies. De fet la mandíbula de Banyoles sempre ha estat un enigma per als investigadors. Datada en un període que s’estén entre 45.000 i 66.000 anys enrere, la seva situació dins l’evolució humana és un misteri. Ara, la recerca publicada a la revista ‘Journal of Human Evolution’ refuta el que s’ha cregut fins ara i diu que la mandíbula seria l’evidència més primerenca de la presència d’Homo Sapiens a Europa.

El fòssil conegut com la mandíbula de Banyoles és una de les restes humanes més rellevants de la Península Ibèrica. I possiblement, com subratlla el Museu Arqueològic de Banyoles, “també una de les més estudiades”. La va descobrir Llorenç Roura l’abril del 1887 en una pedrera de la ciutat. El fòssil es guarda a la farmàcia Alsius, però en aquest museu s’hi exhibeix una còpia molt fidedigna (feta el mateix any 1887).

 

Tot i que se l’ha estudiada a bastament, la seva situació dins l’evolució humana continua essent una qüestió oberta. Segons explica el Museu Arqueològic, la major part dels antropòlegs sí que coincideixen en dir que correspondria a una dona d’entre 40-50 anys, amb un accentuat desgast dentari (perquè menjava molt de peix sec o bé perquè mastegava contínuament pells d’animals per adobar-les).

 

Ara, un equip d’investigadors ha aportat una nova teoria, que conclou que la mandíbula no correspon a un neandertal i que seria el fòssil d’Homo Sapiens més antic d’Europa. La recerca, publicada a la revista especialitzada ‘Journal of Human Evolution’ l’ha liderada un equip multidisciplinar. L’han integrat investigadors de la Universitat de Binghamton i del Museu d’Història Natural de Nova York, de la Càtedra d’Otoacústica Evolutiva i Paleoantropologia d’HM Hospitals, de la Universitat d’Alcalà, de la Complutense i de la Universitat de Girona (UdG).

 

Segons aquesta nova teoria, la mandíbula de Banyoles correspondria a un Homo Sapiens o bé a un híbrid entre aquesta espècie i els neandertals. I per tant, com expliquen els investigadors, posa damunt la taula “que una altra espècie diferent a la dels neandertals va habitar el continent molt abans del que s’ha constatat fins ara, cosa que pot representar l’evidència més primerenca de la presència d’Homo Sapiens a Europa”.

“La interpretació del primer fòssil humà descobert a Espanya, la mandíbula de Banyoles, ha estat objecte de debat durant més d’un segle, tot i que la interpretació més estesa era atribuir-la a un neandertal”, explica un dels coautors de l’estudi, el professor Ignacio Martínez. “Tot i això, aquesta interpretació ha estat refutada per una nova anàlisi, que es basa en un model virtual 3D”, afegeix Martínez, que també codirigeix la Càtedra d’Otoacústica Evolutiva i Paleoantropologia d’HM Hospitals i la Universitat d’Alcalà.

 

Partint d’aquesta imatge en tres dimensions, i del seu estudi, l’investigador explica que la mandíbula de Banyoles “demostra l’existència d’una espècie humana diferent dels neandertals en una època en la qual es creia que aquests eren els únics ocupants d’Europa”. I hi afegeix: “Si Banyoles representa la cruïlla entre una població d’Homo Sapiens i els neandertals, constituiria l’evidència més antiga coneguda de la presència de la nostra espècie a Europa”.

 

La mandíbula de Banyoles està datada en un període que s’estén entre 45.000 i 66.000 anys enrere. Tot i que fins ara s’ha atribuït a un preneandertal o a un neandertal, els investigadors que han dut a terme la recerca expliquen que, en realitat, el fòssil “no presenta els trets característics dels neandertals, per la qual cosa ha estat considerat com un fòssil problemàtic”.

 

Comparació geomètrica

 

La clau de volta d’aquest nou estudi, basat en un model virtual 3D obtingut a partir d’imatges tomogràfiques, ha estat una nova anàlisi de les restes fòssils. Basada en la tècnica que es coneix com a morfometria geomètrica 3D, s’ha centrat a comparar la forma geomètrica -sense tenir en compte les diferències de mida- de la mandíbula de Banyoles amb d’altres de neandertals i d’Homo Sapiens.

 

Els resultats d’aquesta anàlisi van sorprendre els investigadors, com explica el professor del departament d’Antropologia de la Universitat de Binghamton Brian A. Keeling. “Els resultats ens van sorprendre, perquè la mandíbula de Banyoles no comparteix els trets morfològics distintius dels neandertals ni tampoc s’hi assembla en la seva forma geomètrica”, concreta.

 

Segons aquest equip multidisciplinar, els resultats de l’estudi els porten a concloure que la mandíbula de Banyoles “encaixa millor” amb aquelles dels Homo Sapiens tant en l’expressió dels trets individuals com en la forma geomètrica. Tot i que, com també admeten, “molts d’aquests trets també es troben en espècies humanes anteriors, la qual cosa complica una assignació immediata a Homo Sapiens”.

 

D’altra banda, la mandíbula de Banyoles no té un dels trets més diagnòstics de les d’Homo Sapiens; en concret, la presència d’un mentó. En aquest sentit, un altre dels investigadors de la Binghamton University, el professor Rolf Quam, destaca: “Ens trobem amb resultats que mostraven que Banyoles no és un neandertal, però el fet que no tingui mentó ens ha fet ser prudents abans d’assignar-ho a Homo Sapiens. La presència de mentó s’ha considerat durant molt de temps un tret distintiu de la nostra pròpia espècie”.

 

Per això, arribar a un consens científic sobre quina espècie representa la mandíbula Banyoles “és un repte”, admeten els investigadors. I aquí, els autors del nou estudi pensen que la hipòtesi “més probable” per explicar l’anatomia especial del fòssil és que” podria representar un híbrid entre una població prèviament desconeguda d’Homo Sapiens i els neandertals”.
