La UAB investiga per què es moren les abelles

Les abelles es moren, malgrat que no sabem el perquè. La Universitat Autònoma Barcelona vol posar llum sobre aquesta qüestió a través el projecte UABee, un nou espai al campus per la demostració, ensenyament i investigació sobre l’apicultura i la biologia de les abelles. Concretament, s’hi ha instal·lat sis ruscs destinats a allotjar colònies estàndard i amb possibilitat, tot i que no es descarta segons l’activitat i la grandària de la colònia.

Es tracta d’un abellar únic a Catalunya i el tercer de l’Estat espanyol, només precedit per dues instal·lacions realitzades a Còrdova i Osca, que disposa d’un sistema electrònic per controlar les entrades i sortides i sensors d’humitat i temperatura. Els ruscs estan situats sobre una bancada metàl·lica de superfície perforada i el tipus de tanca a utilitzar i la seva senyalització impediran l’accés accidental de persones o animals.

Les abelles són un element fonamental en la natura i en els cultius agrícoles perquè són una peça clau en la pol·linització. No obstant, la seva població s’ha vist seriosament amenaçada en els darrers anys a causa de múltiples factors, el que posa en perill, d’una manera especial, a les abelles domèstiques. Diversos organismes internacionals han alertat de les conseqüències de la disminució de la seva població i han recomanat diversos tipus d’iniciatives de foment i protecció de l’apicultura, tant en condicions rurals com urbanes.
